Dr. Seth B.C. Shonkoff is the founding Executive Director of PSE Healthy Energy. Since joining in 2012, he has built PSE into a leading voice at the intersection of energy, climate, and human health.
Under his leadership, PSE launched its Methane + Health Initiative, the first effort to document, at scale, the air quality impacts and human health risks of natural gas emissions, translating rigorous science into data and tools to inform decision-making by policymakers, regulators, and communities. He has guided the organization’s research agenda across water, air, climate, and human health, and is a widely recognized expert on the human health, air quality, and climate dimensions of oil and gas systems, with more than 20 years of experience and 75 peer-reviewed publications and reports.
Dr. Shonkoff has testified before Congress and state legislatures and has contributed to landmark scientific assessments, including the Human Health chapter of the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report. He has also served on multiple governmental science advisory panels and chaired and led multiple high-profile science policy efforts, including the Public Health Science Advisory Panel to the State of California’s oil regulator, CalGEM. He holds a PhD and MPH from UC Berkeley and is an Associate Researcher at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health and an affiliate at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
